Much to my surprise my mother was in Tucson! My cousin Xioli was staying with our Granny and my mother wanted to take Avery to see her (they were born a month a part from each other). So Since my mom was in town she picked me up and I hung out at Granny's house while the little children played.
Usually I am Avery's favorite and is always so excited to see me. When they arrived at my house to pick me up Avery was complaining that we weren't making it to Xioli fast enough. I had to force a hug out of her. It was kind of hysterical. I forgave her though because he and Xioli were pretty cute.
That doll looks like a demon
Thursday
For my JOUR 205 class we got extra credit if we attended the viewing of a documentary called First to Fall. It covered two Libyan men living in Canada, who go back to Libya to join the revolution. The director, Rachel Anderson, was up close and personal in the war and could have died at any second with bombs going off all around her. I would never be able to handle going into such a hostile environment and sticking my camera in everyones face. I wouldn't live for one hour on the field. So I have a lot of respect for Rachel and the work she did. You all should watch it!
Friday
I requested off work Friday because Zach was coming to Tucson in the morning! He arrived in the late morning, and joined me at the institute for devotional and for dollar lunch. Then went to target to buy some essential snacks to get through the day and so I could buy a black shirt. I even got Zach to buy another UofA shirt, the conversion process is nearly complete, he now just has to actually attend the U love A.
In the late afternoon Zach, Rory, Caroline and I carpooled while Steph, Annabeth, Lauren (heck yeah Lauren came to Tucson too), and Annabeth's nephew carpooled to the regional YSA tucson activity at Old Tucson. The activity was the bomb.com so let me walk you through it
When we arrived the first thing on the schedule for us YSA was a stunt show. I've seen many stunt shows in my lifetime but it still amazes me how brave this actors are to fall off a 20+-foot building into some sort of safety thing that captures them.
At one point the actors asked for volunteers to learn how to throw a movie punch, so naturally our group of friends starts chanting for Steph to go up there, and they picked her! I guess her punch was a little too aggressive and ended up having to give the actor a kiss... on the cheek...
After the stunt show it was dinner time (I think I failed to mention earlier that this entire activity was free INCLUDING the food). We had pulled pork sandwiches, beans and cole slaw, but naturally I only ate the pulled pork sandwiches, but they were very delicious.
After the dinner it was time for the speaker! I can't remember who it was, but he was a great speaker and taught us a great principle of never looking back.
After the speaker, the real party started: the dance! I love dances, more than life. But the one thing that could possibly make them love me more was if there was a marriage proposal flash mob in the middle of it... OH WAIT THERE WAS! And it was the cutest thing in the whole world. I may have cried.
At some point during the night we went to the photo booth and posed for these lovely photographs:
When the dance was over my car bolted out and headed back the the New Tucson. We waited up for our other friends to discuss the happening of the night, like a little review session in case anyone missed anything exciting. But that didn't last too long because I was dead tired and had a long day ahead of me on Saturday!
Saturday
In the morning Zach came back from sleeping at Rory's house and just in the nick of time because I tried to get into his car to put my stuff away and it started screaming at me, probably waking up all of Tucson. Once Zach successfully dismantled the bomb we were on our way to Mesa, but not without a top to McDonalds breakfast along the way.
You may be wondering why I went to Mesa. Well it was my sisters prom day and she loves me so much and wanted me to do her hair and even let me take their group pictures. Plus I got a free ride there with Zach, so why not take it.
While McKenzie was on her day-date with her prom group, Zach and I played power rangers with Avery, went to Native New Yorker for lunch ( and discovered this glorious meal special) and went to bahama bucks to pick Avery up a shaved ice. Oh and I was running on empty so it was imperative that I got a red bull to get through the day.
Eventually we were all home and it was time to get McKenzie ready for prom. We agreed on a hairstyle she wanted to do, and I am in no way a hair stylist so I was worried it would look awful. Luckily the style she wanted was actually really easy and it took my like 5 minutes AND it looked amazing. Other prom preparations included: painting her nails, doing her makeup, plucking her eyebrows (after we did the makeup by the way, I would not recommend) while she squeezed Zachs hand in horror, and finishing the final touched on her dress! Now for the pictures!
I clearly need to dye my hair blonde like my sisters
Then Lat (her date) came and picked her up and did the whole corsage/boutonniere thing.
Then we headed over to Mesa Arts Center to take group photos... in the rain... what fun. (If you want to see the full album, it's on McKenzie's facebook page, and if you're friends with me you should be able to see it)
After taking the pictures they all went to dinner to have a fun party time.
Zach and I went home to show my mother the photos and then we went to dinner at Joe's Farm Grill and by tradition shared a cupcake at the Coffee Shop.
Afterwards we went to his house to watch the Lorax (my favorite movie ever) but I fell asleep instantly. Then we went to my house to edit the photos and he fell asleep instantly. Clearly a poppin' night for the both of us.
Sunday
Zach come over to hang out for a little bit before my family and I made our way back to Tucson for Rory's institute graduation!
During the graduation McKenzie and I tried to teach Avery how to properly play rock paper scissor, and apparently that was pretty entertaining for people. Multiple people came up to me afterwards and said Avery was the best part of the graduation.
Tuesday
I am fast forwarding to Tuesday because it was the most chaotic day of my life that may or may not have included multiple break downs in my car and walking to class.
It started off in the morning. I needed to print out my student, Jacob's cultural portfolio for his spanish 101 class at 8 am. The portfolio was ten pages long and full of color, so I didn't want to waste Steph's ink and paper with the printer she has at home. So I go on campus to the printing place and guess what? They don't even open until 8. Fearing that we would need to turn the portfolio in at the beginning of the class, I tried to use one of the print kiosks in the union for the first time. Well it didn't work out and I accidentally left my catcard on top of a kiosk. I realized about 20 steps outside of the room that I didn't have it, so I ran back and it was gone. Catcards are life people, and 25 bucks to replace. So I ask people and they couldn't see it and didn't see anyone take it. So I just accepted that I would have to buy a new one.
The printing place finally opens and I have to pay ELEVEN BUCKS for this dang portfolio... was not happy about that. The good news is that we were still able to turn the portfolio in on time.
After work I went and checked the lost and found and they had my cat card! I was so relieved.
Then my next freak out was that I didn't have enough material for my final project in my photojournalism class that was due that day. I ran over to the institute and got as much as I could and went to the class. The good news is that the deadline was extended to Friday, so I still have time to make it perfect.
The worst part of it all had to do with a check. I took out some of my investments to help pay for Italy, and the check came to my house in Mesa. I was supposed to take it back with me when I came to Tucson but I forgot it. As a back up plan I had McKenzie log into my bank account on the app and deposit it through the app... well the check went missing. I had my mom look for it all day at the Mesa home, I went through all my bags here in Tucson to see if I brought it without knowing. McKenzie got home from school and helped my mom search for it, Zach even went over to the house at night to search for it. ALL DAY they were all searching while I had to go through with my school and work day so worried about it and thinking "great I'm not going to be able to go to Italy anymore".... and then all our continuous prayers were finally answered.... they finally found it at like 8 oclock at night in a drawer in our kitchen! I felt so stupid that I didn't tell them to look there, but I was telling them all these other obscure places, but I was so relieved. I wanted to start crying because I have such awesome people in their life who spent so much time out of their day to find this stupid check which allowed me to go to Italy in the summer.
Then I find out that my Dad knew where it was all along....... and none of us knew. what fun.
ANYWAY I made it through Tuesday, and I am pretty sure I can make it through the rest of this semester as well.
PS Happy birthday Pam Walton, you're pretty awesome!
