I'm Now A Padawan

Friday March 4
As it was mentioned in my last blog post I had three interviews for internships on Friday. Two of the interviews went really well and one was just mediocre. I'm really bad at on the spot questions like "you have to go write two news stories today in Tucson, what are you going to write about?" You would think as a journalist I would be able to come up with story ideas easy-peasy, not the case. But other than that one question, everything went pretty well. I walked out of there really hopeful that I would get an internship.

My mother, father and sister came to Tucson in the evening for the Spring football practice.
Let's never forget last years Spring game, when Rich Rod hired me as his replacement, and I humbly turned him down:
#teamSydRichRod

Rich Rod switched it up on us this year and instead of a game it was just a practice, but it was still pretty fun... mostly because I had Avery there with me to entertain me.
Unfortunately Rich Rod did not let me call the final play of the game/practice, so my offer was not renewed. #ohwell.

Can two Richardson girls take a picture without at least one of them doing a Miranda face? NOPE.

After the game my family left pretty much immediately, but it was fun having them in Tucson for at least a little while.
It was 8 pm and I felt like I had the whole night ahead of me, so Steph and I decided to do what most college girls would do on a Friday night: go see Zootopia!
Okay guys. This movie is actually perfect. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with the sloths all over again.
If you think you're too cool to go see a cartoon Disney movie, just know that I don't think you're cool enough to see it. It was amazing.

Saturday March 5
This day was dedicated to basketball. Since Tom (you're welcome Tom for mentioning your name) was out of town, he let me shoot the last home game. Last home game meant the last game with my favorite player from day one: Gabe York. So so sad.
So in the morning I had to go pick up a lens from JB to use at the game, then I quickly ate some lunch (then started my 24+ hour fast, no fun) and then met up with Courtney who would be shooting the game with me.
The game was a blast because we just killed Stanford (side note: I was really excited to shoot this game because I also shot the away game at Stanford, so it felt like my territory) and Gabe was just swooshing threes left and right. It was just amazing. And senior night? Not going to lie, my eyes watered. The team is going to be so different next year without the seniors! But I am glad I got to capture them during their final game at McKale.
Here are some of my favorites from the game:

After the game and the senior ceremony I went to the Wildcat to do work and then pretty much spent the rest of my day sitting on the couch doing nothing productive.

Sunday March 6
Church was grand as usual. I have been struggling to decide if I should work during the summer or if I should go to Mesa and do all the fun vacationing things that I would miss out on if I were working. I didn't know if I had an internship for the summer so everything was really up in the air. So I decided to fast to try and get some guidance pertaining to what I should be doing this summer. I thought I was going to die. I am one of those cheater fasters who doesn't eat breakfast or lunch and then eats a meal at 2 pm because that's not lunch anymore. So I went full fledged 24 hours no food. and I lived! And it was worth it.
But thank the heavens for Break the Fast and for Maddy Truman organizing one that made my fast all worth it in the end. The best part? Megan's delicious dessert thing that I don't even know how to describe, it was just heavenly and I probably could have eaten the entire pan.
After break the fast, Steph and I decided to go visit the Tucson temple grounds to check out the progress being made. Neither of us had visited the grounds yet so it was quite the adventure trying to figure out where to go and where the best views were. I can't believe how quickly it is coming together but that it still isn't supposed to be finished until the end of 2017.... I'm predicting now that it will be finished way before then. They are just getting to work on that temple.
Is it premature to say that I am going to get married in this temple? Oh well. I'm getting married here.

Monday March 7
Monday wasn't all that special but there was a really funny story at work.
So the student that I go to classes with, his name is Chase. He missed school on Friday because he got sick. On Monday he came to school with his nose all chapped from blowing his nose so much. I kept saying to him that he could rub some lotion on it to make it feel better but he just kept saying "I need a mask." When he said mask I was thinking like a full fledged halloween mask so no one would want to see his face. So I kept telling him that he doesn't need a mask, that it's not that bad and that we can rub some lotion around his nose to make him feel better. But he was very insistent on getting a mask. So after he took his exam, he walked over to campus health, and I didn't really want to put up a fight even though I knew there wasn't going to be a mask in there for him and that even if there was he wouldn't be able to buy one. But I just let him walk right into the pharmacy and he knew exactly where to go to get one of these masks:

Another exciting thing that happened on Monday: Zach informed me that the Blood Orange Ginger Lemonade is back at Cafe Rio! If you guys go take a look at this blog post you will read about the day my life changed forever. If you're too lazy to click on the link, I shall provide an excerpt:
I also discovered the most heavenly drink to have ever graced my tongue with its deliciousness. It was the blood orange ginger lemonade. It's only there for a limited amount of time so you all need to go there and start stocking up for me. I seriously love this drink more than all the mountain dews combined. So clearly it's a necessity that I learn how to make this drink and drink nothing but that for the rest of my existence.
I was not exaggerating in the slightest that it was the most heavenly drink to ever grace my tongue. I just can't wait to get back to the valley so I can reunite with it #reunitedanditfeelssogood

For FHE on Monday we went to the temple grounds #soholy and then went to La Encantada for some Frost, and for everyone to freeze their butts off.

I also had an identity crisis on Monday. I discovered that my right foot is significantly larger than my left, like an entire half size. I do not know how I never noticed it before, but it is really rocking my world.
I kept calling this my mid life crisis but then I remembered that when I was 15 I already had my mid life crisis when I discovered that I have grey hair, so this is just an identity crisis.
I'm not a drama queen at all people.

Tuesday March 8
School was school, nothing funny worth noting. Except for one of my classes I am reading a book called "This Town: Two Parties and a Funeral" AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. If you love politics, butt kissing and Washington, you have got to read it.

On Tuesday night I went to the #LDSFace2Face with Elder Holland devotional/fireside/thing. It was really awesome. They talked a whole lot about marriage which is like inevitable when you are talking to young single mormons, I just wish people didn't revolve all their questions around it. But it was good nonetheless.
Here are some things that were said that I really liked:
  • You should never hang back on a good thing
  • The importance of recognizing how the spirit speaks to you, because it speaks differently to everyone
  • Everything good in this life takes work
  • No one in the church is defined by their marital status
  • God can speak to you in different ways: through your heart, your mind, your intelligence etc.
So yeah it was really good! And afterward we had walking tacos (tacos in a fritos bag, everyone was really hung up about the concept). Nothing like good lessons and free dinner, that's why I'm a mormon hahaha.

Also this is me and Elder Holland face swapped:

Wednesday March 9
So if you don't have short term memory loss you will probably recall that I have been trying to decide whether or not to work this summer or to stay in Mesa. I hadn't head from any of the internships that said they would get back to me after the weekend, and I kept thinking about how I had enough money saved up to pay rent through the summer, so I pretty much convinced myself that I wasn't going to work this summer and that I would vacation it up. My current internship at Tucson Local Media also started kicking itself into gear and giving me assignments, so I was like, "it's all good I am getting experience this semester so I won't have to in the summer"
Then I get this email:
This was the internship that was my #1 choice... so life really threw me a curve ball. HOW COULD I POSSIBLY TURN THIS DOWN? So looks like I won't be vacationing it up, but I am really excited about this opportunity and everything that I am going to learn from it. You're reading the blog of the Arizona Daily Star's newest photo apprentice... do you feel pretty special? haha you shouldn't, but I would smile if you did. I'm like a padawan, I just feel great.
The photo editor who hired me at the Daily Wildcat a year ago, Beka Noble, did this apprenticeship last summer/fall so she has been giving me lots of tips to succeed. I am excited and scared and thrilled and terrified all at the same time.

Megan Eyre came to Tucson tonight!! Steph and I met up with her this evening at the institute, and then we went to go get some Raspados with her, her cousin, her cousin's boyfriend and Ali!
I had never had a Raspados before but it was actually really good! It was shaved ice and ice cream and fruit and condensed milk! I got mango and it was delicious.

For those of you who were not in Tucson 2 1/2 years ago, or weren't following my blog back then... Megan was the first sister missionary in 3rd ward and her and her companion Sister Hencdricks were my favorite sister missionary companions ever. We were pretty much BFFs:

I haven't seen her since Prince Tay Tay and Natalie's wedding in December 2013 so it was great to see her and to catch up!
