Luckily I have a mother who needs to be extra early at airports for that small chance a plane might arrive early, and that is exactly what happened! Rory's flight was supposed to land 30 minutes earlier.
There was another family waiting for their missionary who served in Spain, who was on the same flight as Rory. This family clearly does not understand that the Richardsons need to be the center of attention and one up everyone. Everyone in the family was wearing matching shirts and they all had flags and posters. Then there was my family with a giant sign that said "Family Love Rory"... Unfortunately not many people at the airport were diehard fans of the show Arrested Development, so they didn't get the joke and were very confused as to why our grammar was so terrible.
We also made other signs... my personal favorite was McKenzies attempt to write "Welcome home Rory" in Portuguese but google translate did not come through for her as she wrote "house of welcome Rory".
In addition to the families complete coordination they took up the entire center of the airport so we had to stand off to the side and it was very difficult to see Rory coming down the aisle... But of course Richardson's must have all their glory and fate knew that... which is why Rory came out before the other missionary... way before the other missionary. But I do give that family the best dressed award. You might be thinking that a missionary coming home should not be a competition, and to that I say you clearly do not know my family.
Here are some pictures from Rory's arrival:
He is so dang tan and so dang skinny. That's how EJ was too when he came home so I wasn't too surprised. His accent kind of cracks me up because it sounds Scottish sometimes.
After we left the airport Rory wanted to go to McDonalds, unfortunately Mickey D's is not open very late on weekdays so we had to settle for taco bell... McKenzie wasn't disappointed at all. Then we all came home, Rory showed us everything he brought home from Brazil and then he opened all of the presents he has missed out on the past two years.
This is Rory's new style apparently...
One by one people started to fall asleep but I stayed up with Rory until 2:30 AM, listening to Brazilian music and stalking his friends on facebook. We even did this weird Brazil tradition of sharing herbal tea... which we mixed with mountain dew... I'm not a big herbal tea person but when it's mixed with mountain dew it's not too shabby. One might say I'm addicted, and I would think they're crazy. The night was interesting because he kept talking to me in Portuguese as if I knew what he was saying... so I just smiled and nodded at everything he said to me until he realized that I am an english speaker.
Eventually I had to call it a night because we had to wake up at 6 for his meeting with the stake president.
Now that Rory is no longer a full time missionary he is playing video games, I would expect nothing else from him.
I'm so glad he is home and I can't wait for him to be in Tucson with me and EJ! I don't know if Tucson can handle three Richardsons but it is certainly going to be a non stop party.
